Muir, Jean

Muir, Jean
   b. 1933, London; d. 1995
   Fashion designer
Born in 1933, Muir trained in the fashion industry, working for Liberty and Jaeger until launching her own Jean Muir label in 1966. Her training as a dressmaker and tailor was reflected in the precision cutting of her elegant designs, whose apparent simplicity masked their impeccable tailoring. Muir’s signature fabrics were soft jerseys and matt crepes in muted colours and navy blue, a colour which Muir made ‘the new black’. Muir’s designs brought her acclaim in the fashion media and a staunch following among women who wanted classic modern elegance rather than the shock of the new. The label has continued since her death in 1995.
